K2 Base Camp Weather Considerations Summer season in the Karakoram trekking season is extremely limited, primarily in the months of July and August. It can be divided into the following categories: 1. Peak Season: (July - August) Weather: Best and most stable weather of the year, clearest view of K2 with minimal wind.

Temperature: Warm daytime high temperatures ($15-25$ at lower campsites), cold at night ($-5 to -10$ at Concordia).

Recommendations: It is considered the safest and best time to trek and crossing the Gondogoro La. 2. Shoulder Season: (June and September) Weather: Snow can be significant at higher camps at the beginning of the month; late month and September can have cold clear crisp air with a very low crowd. Temperature: much colder than in July-August.

Recommendation: Best for serious trekking, though can be risky.

3. Off-Season: (October - May) Weather: Very cold and heavily snowy, high-altitude passes such as the Gondogoro La may be inaccessible. Recommendation: Trekking and expeditions are typically not possible due to extremely cold conditions and hazards.

Our Clean Water Protocol At Black Yak Adventure we value your health above all and guarantee fresh drinking water throughout your trip. Hygiene In The Wilderness Maintaining the standards of hygiene when camping in the remote parts of Baltoro Glacier is quite challenging and complicated. However, at Black Yak, we ensure that our valuable customers are at ease by following these steps: Dedicated Private Tents: Private and exclusively designated toilet tents are set up at every camp site, at a suitable distance from the dining/living and sleeping areas. 'Long-drop' Style toilet systems: The long-drop system where you'd dump your waste into deep, traditionally eco-friendly holes, is most common in some of the more established camps, such as Paiju or Urdukas, because it's better suited to such environments and more hygienic in Gilgit-Baltistan's remote settings.

Provision of Hygiene Facilities: We offer a constant supply of water and soap at each private toilet tent for the guests' convenience, although a small pack of biodegradable wet wipes is recommended as a supplementary amenity in addition to the toilet paper which is provided.

'Leave No trace' principle: Black Yak Adventure adheres to rigorous standards of 'Leave no trace', covering up the dug out pits thoroughly after our group's departure and carrying out any necessary treatments for effective waste disposal so as to leave the Karakoram pristine. While on trek: In case of a personal need to answer the nature's call while traversing between camps, your guide will identify a private spot along the trail where you may comfortably do so while being mindful of the guidelines in this regard including maintaining a distance from streams and the established route of travel as per international "mountain code".

There aren't any permanent showers within tents in Baltoro Glacier, but on most major campsite Black Yak Adventure provides a designated 'Shower Tent'. Inside we give you a basin of hot water for you to use. The majority of trekkers use biodegradable wet wipes and a hot water sponge.

Here at Black Yak Adventure we realize that to conquer the mountain, you need nourishment, so let us provide it. You will have experienced and highly professional mountain cooks at your service daily preparing for you a selection of fresh, clean and high-energy dishes with a blend of traditional Pakistani dishes and European standards. Meals will be a fusion of hearty stews, pasta, fresh meats and vegetables. If required we can prepare for vegetarian, and/or gluten-free guests if arranged prior to booking.

Baggage Limit for K2 Base Camp Trek For K2 base camp trekking, your usual baggage weight for 1 trekker is 20 kg (44 lbs). These bags are carried by our experienced high altitude porter. Any extra weight more than above mentioned is subject to an additional carriage charges per Kg.

Once a minimum of bookings have been made, a trip from Black Yak Adventure is classified as a “Guaranteed trip”. This means your journey plans are on hold by Black Yak Adventures and your scheduled adventure will depart no matter how many further bookings there are. It is best to always check if your specific dates have confirmed before purchasing flights.

The Policy on Independent Trekking in the Karakoram “You don’t actually need a tour guide, do you?” - My friend, as we packed our bags for the trip of a lifetime to the foothills of the most famous mountain in the world. My friend has an adventurous soul, it is true, but like most other people, he is oblivious to the realities and regulations surrounding an expedition to the Himalayas. For legal and safety purposes, travelling solo to K2 base camp is prohibited by the Pakistani Government.

Let’s break down the short version for you: Government-licensed guide required: All who embark on a journey through the restricted areas in Baltistan are required to have a registered, government-licensed mountain guide travelling with them. Trekking permits are only given to licensed trekking companies: Pakistan trekking permits are issued exclusively to licensed tour operators on behalf of trekking customers (such as Black Yak Adventure).

Porters required: On account of there being no tea houses on Baltoro glacier to stop for refreshments, you’ll have your own support crew of porters to accompany you, bearing all of the gear required for you as well as yourself. Safety of yourself: Navigating the Baltoro glacier terrain and heights can be difficult and dangerous. It is more appropriate to journey with a skilled crew.

Small group sizes, with a maximum of 18 participants, means our treks are highly individual and safe. We make sure our leaders can cope with logistics at high altitude while keeping the group size manageable and the mountain a silent, authentic place.

Expedition Gear – Where to Get It If a specialized wardrobe for high altitudes isn’t something you’re eager to accumulate, here is a guide to acquiring necessary equipment for our trips. Our clients can acquire quality gear for rent or purchase at any of these major hubs: Skardu The Expedition Base Most technical climbing equipment (e.g. Double boots, crampons and down suits) can be acquired at a low cost price in Skardu, either by rent or purchase. One of our expedition guides would gladly assist you to one of the special outdoor shops, ensuring proper fitting and quality.

Islamabad Where to Buy Gear If you intend to buy a brand new set of technical clothing or camping equipment (sleeping bags, tents, backpacks), the capital city offers the finest outdoors stores.

Major clothing purchases would ideally be made prior to travelling north to the mountains of Gilgit- Baltistan. Black Yak Adventure Supply For a completely worry-free expedition, we have also put together a small stock of items for rental for our clients. Book through us to be certain that your equipment has been pre-tested for high altitude environments and is available in Skardu.

Electricity We have a portable petrol generator on our campsites and can supply either petrol for you to recharge items in a few hours of darkness at camp. (3-4 hours per night on average). All of our high-power generators are for team equipment only but we make sure your batteries are topped up! Solar we have can generate and charge a portion of the teams and groups equipment such as mobile phones and camera.

WiFi and Data There is no WiFi in the mountains.

The internet on SCOM is not great in the mountains and we can only guarantee that there will be limited 4G available on the ground, with the 4G reception is sometimes available at Concordia and K2 base camps with the SCOM mobile simcard. Our guide and liaison Officer always travel with a satellite phone for use in emergencies and contact with our office in Skardu.

The KKH is an absolute triumph of engineering and the spinal cord of all our expeditions. As for your travels on the KKH, the main elements of your personal safety concerns are as follow: Infrastructure & Maintenance: While the highway is a smooth paved road, the extreme conditions and geography can at times result in landslides, often induced by the rains in the monsoon season, or heavy snow falls in winter. Black Yak Adventures stays on top of the real-time conditions and road reports, in conjunction with NHA and FWO, before proceeding with convoys.

Security: Without a doubt the Gilgit-Baltistan region has been developed as one of the most secure for visiting tourists.

The local Tourist Police presence is strong, with frequent checks points all along the route. We advise all our visitors to stick to daylight hours for travel. Always employ a well-versed and professional local driver for an up to date sense of the mountain traffic flow.
