Nanga Parbat: The Majestic “Challenger Mountain” of the Himalayas
Nanga Parbat at 8,126m (26,660ft) is the ninth tallest mountain on Earth and the western edge of the Himalaya. Located in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region, its name comes from the Sanskrit “Naked Mountain,” named for its nearly sheer southern face which is unable to hold any significant amounts of snow. Nanga Parbat contains what many consider the highest face in the world, the Rupal Face which stands 4,600m (15,090ft) high from base to summit.
Standing at the bottom of this colossal wall of rock is one of the more humbling experiences in mountaineering.
It was not successfully ascended until 1953 by Austrian mountaineer Hermann Buhl, by then it was already infamous, earning the monicker of ‘Killer Mountain’ for its technical complexity, regular avalanches, and harsh climate which caused the death of many previous climbers and explorers. It remains the most technically challenging of the world’s 8000 meter peaks.
