The Spear Of The Karakoram: Laila Peak Base Camp Trek

Some mountains you climb. Laila Peak, you simply stand before – and let it take your breath away. Laila Peak Laila Peak The Karakoram Range, Pakistan When mountains that dominate your imagination meet you, the landscape often ceases to exist, and all you can feel is awe – awe at nature’s immensity and its artistic genius.

We climb most of the mountains we encounter.

We trek to the base camp of Laila Peak, and then…we surrender to the sheer magnitude. This sharp, vertical spike of granite rising steeply from the heart of Gilgit-Baltistan’s Hushe Valley at an almost vertical pitch of 45-degrees, is arguably the most photogenic silhouette in the Karakoram Range and one of Pakistan’s iconic peaks – the “Matterhorn of Pakistan.” Don’t worry, you don’t need to summit it. Simply stand at the bottom, at about 4000m, gazing up at its almost impossibly slender spire, and be prepared to have your breath completely stolen away.

The views from the top are something few on Earth get to witness, but for many the experience of standing at Laila Peak’s feet, humbled by the 6000 meters of sheer rock and ice, is equally rewarding.

This trek is a visual spectacle From Skardu, your trek into Hushe Valley and towards the Laila Peak Base Camp takes you through blooming alpine meadows, past the gushing meltwater of the Gondogoro Glacier and through towering granite walls and ancient moraines. Day by day you are enveloped in an ever more remote, stark and breathtaking high altitude environment. As you walk from verdant pastures to fields of scree and ice, your trek gradually reveals the subtle beauty and grandeur of the Karakoram.

Eventually, as you round a corner, it will reveal itself: Laila Peak, catching the sunlight like a perfectly sculpted dagger.
