Gasherbrum IV is likely a technically tougher challenge than K2 itself with a constantly shifting nature from steep rock to precarious ice to lethal objective risk. A sheer 3,000m West Face or “Shining Wall” represents the Karakoram’s greatest challenge for advanced climbers.

The Baltoro Glacier meets another glacier and it is located at that spot, under the shadow of its Gasherbrum cousins, K2, and Broad Peak, and dominating the landscape of near Concordia.

Contrary to the common interpretation of “Shining Wall”, the name actually stems from two Balti words: rgasha, which means beautiful, and brum, meaning mountain. The actual meaning of the word is “Beautiful Mountain”. Even though the West Face do appear beautiful during the sunset, this is just a fortunate coincident.

Summer (Mid-June – End of August) This is by far the most common time to visit. It has the most settled conditions and comfortable temperatures. Winter attempts on the mountain are almost unheard of because of the extreme difficulty and unpredictable nature of Karakoram winter conditions.

The expedition usually spans 45 to 55 days, inclusive of flights to and from Pakistan, trekking from Askole to Base camp (7-9 days), a significant amount of time at basecamp spent on acclimatization and rope fixing (30+ days), and an equal number of days returning down either the Baltoro or Gondogoro La.

Yes, a climbing/expedition permit (Royalty Fee) issued by Gilgit-Baltistan Council and Pakistan Alpine club is required. At Black Yak Adventure, we arrange all the necessary government formalities like, Visa Support Letter and the required Liaison Officer (LO) arrangement for the expedition.

All mountaineering expeditions in Pakistan above $6,500$m have a requirement by law to take along a Government Liaising Officer. Their job is the official government presence on the trip to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and provide guidance to the group regarding safety, communication with local administrative officials, and reporting during the ascent.

You'll need to be incredibly fit. Cardiovascular strength, core support and the mental grit to handle several weeks in the thin air are essential to even start this expedition. Twelve months of conditioning, weighted climbs, long-distance running and at least a multi-day altitude experience is advised.

For those who have achieved the summite of at least one, preferably two, of the 7000m peaks (i.e. Spantik, Peak Lenin) and have an extremely high level of proficiency in the arts of technical rock and ice-climbing and crevasse rescue at the highest of altitudes.

Although it is under 8,000m, Gasherbrum IV is generally not summited using supplementary oxygen, even in alpine-style approaches to the mountain. Some expeditions that climb it commercially may make oxygen available in a support capacity, however the extreme technical difficulty would make carrying oxygen systems more of an hindrance on rock pitches.

Make sure to get yourself high-altitude double or triple boots, an -40 degree sleeping bag, GORE-TEX technical jackets and pants, and a serious down suit. All the equipment in communal usage is of good quality. We supply high-altitude waterproof North Face or mountain-hardwear tents, kitchen/mess tents, stoves, fuel and fixed ropes. Our itineraries encourage a slow, "Goldilocks" rate of acclimatization. "Climb high, sleep low" is our philosophy. Daily monitoring of your oxygen saturation level using a pulse oximeter, coupled with an ample supply of diamox and emergency oxygen available at base camp in case of need.

We are always in satellite contact – 24 hours a day. Should a critical situation arise where there is severe injury or illness we organize an immediate transfer for a helicopter evacuation with our partners, Askari Aviation. It is compulsory that every climber has extensive high-altitude rescue insurance to cover helicopter evacuation to the altitude of 8000 meters.

During the trek and at basecamp we boil all our water and also chemically treat it; nonetheless, we highly advise climbers carry their own personal water filters (e.g. Sawyer, Lifestraw) for the first two days of trekking in areas such as Askole and Jhula.

Pakistani and Western food are prepared by our expedition cook, the Pakistani/Western food combo is served at the higher campsites whereas at the Base camp the meal is based on fresh products with dishes rich in protein (dal mash, chicken, egg) to fill the high energetic needs and sometimes includes some fresh fruits, pasta, porridge… We are happy to make any kind of diet plan on customer’s request.

We believe in preserving Karakoram and carry back to Skardu, every ounce of human waste and all refuse collected from camp and by our team and porters to be responsibly disposed off. We will be working under the guidelines for environment of Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP).

Our local Balti porters and High Altitude workers (HAWs) come from the valleys of Shigar and Hushe. They form the soul of our operation; they have immense knowledge of these mountains and are a part of us. We provide them fair wages and adequate clothing and equipment as mandated by the government and insured for life.

Yes. There are no cell signals on Baltoro Glacier. However, we arrange for satellite phone access and Starlink or a satellite internet service (based on the package). Service can be intermittent depending on weather and available power.

Generally the package does include the transport within Pakistan and also hotel in Islamabad as well as in Skardu, trekking logistics and porter support, permit fees, LO expenses, meals during expedition and the group climbing gear. However international airfares, travel insurance, tip and your personal gear are normally not part of the basic package.

With that much difficulty and it also being so close to being “an 8000m”, it does not draw nearly the same number of commercial climbers as K2 and instead, it is only the very top climbers that give it a shot resulting in a very few ascents.
